Anti-slop — why Gist is not a generic AI summary

Slop is AI text that sounds like knowing and isn't. Gist has a stopping point, surfaces tension, and keeps the source one click away.

Slop is AI text that sounds like knowing and isn't.

It is confident, plausible, grammatically fine — and often subtly wrong in ways you cannot catch unless you already know the answer. Generic "summarize this article" tools produce slop by default. They flatten a piece into one blob of text with no obligation to preserve its structure, its argument, or its tensions.

You have read slop. The article that felt sharp becomes three bullet points that could describe anything. The paper that had a real disagreement becomes a blurb with no disagreement anywhere.

Gist is built not to do that. Three concrete differences.

Gist has a stopping point

A normal summary collapses depth to a paragraph. Gist keeps depth as a dimension you control — one slide, then the layers that fit this piece. The core is always first. The reasoning or the dramatic arc is a layer down. The objection, if there is one, is below that. You read as far as the piece deserves, no further.

You can stop at the first slide. That is the design.

Gist surfaces tension, not just claims

Every piece has tension somewhere. Gist surfaces it regardless of form.

For argument-shaped content — analysis, essays, research papers — the reader always includes a Challenge (the strongest objection to the thesis) and a Rebuttal (the answer to that objection, from a new angle). You do not have to hunt for the counterpoint. It is there.

For story-shaped content, the tension is The Tension layer — the complication that broke the story's equilibrium, and the open question it left behind.

A generic summary tells you what someone said. Gist tells you what happened, what it means, and what to push back on.

The original is one click away

The reader is an overlay. It sits on top of the page you were already reading. If Gist got something wrong, the correct version is underneath — close the overlay and read the real thing.

No page is replaced. No author is edited. No summary is the last word.
