Sign-in problems
Stuck on sign-in? Reload the extension first — most failures are stale auth state. Then try the other method (Google vs email).
Three fixes handle almost every case. Try them in order.
1. Reload the extension
Most sign-in failures — especially with Google — come from stale auth state in the extension, not a blocked popup. Reloading clears it:
- Open
chrome://extensions. - Toggle Gist off, wait a second, toggle it back on.
- Try signing in again.
2. Try the other method
Gist supports both Google and email/password. If one loops, the other usually does not.
- Google looping? Try email/password.
- Email/password rejecting a correct password? Try Google.
If email/password sign-in opens in a browser popup and that popup is closing, then check the Chrome URL bar for a "popup blocked" icon, allow popups from gist.is, and try again.
3. Reinstall
If reloading and switching methods both fail, a clean reinstall clears all stale state.
See Update or reinstall. Your account, history, and subscriptions are untouched.
Sign-in is the same on the web and in the extension
Signing in on /join, /app, or another Gist web page signs you in everywhere within a few seconds. If the extension and the web disagree for longer, reload the extension.
If none of that works
Send a note via contact support. Include:
- The browser (Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge).
- The method you tried (Google or email).
- What you see — error message, blank screen, popup that closes instantly.
- Whether a reinstall has been tried.
What is next
- Manage your subscription — needs sign-in.
- Install Gist on Chrome — from scratch.
